"(...) Soleil d’Hiver moves through darkened landscapes; its photographs are like riffs, composing a threnody of heartbreaking beauty. (...)"

"This project was born from a sentence spoken by his father on the day of his mother’s funeral. “I remember… I was twelve years old. I watched Algiers recede, knowing I would never return.” He had never really heard this story before.

In a single second, he understood that he had inherited not only his family’s memories, but also an absence, an emptiness, a nostalgia that had no name. A nostalgia we do not choose, but that nevertheless shapes us. The emptiness left by a father who spoke too little. The emptiness of a childhood abandoned on the deck of a boat in 1961, watching Algiers disappear into the distance. The emptiness left by a mother who vanished one winter morning, leaving behind a son who had become, almost in spite of himself, the translator of a family history lived in hushed tones.

Soleil d’Hiver seeks to repair a memory, to question what we pass on without meaning to, and to understand how art can transform absence into gesture, loss into light. After years of travelling through the Arab world, he came to understand that his images were not simply landscapes, faces or traces. They were attempts to fill a void. And within these silences stands a musician and photographer, Grégory Dargent, suddenly realising that his journeys through the Arab world, his fractured images, his rough sounds, his splintered melodies… were not only speaking about the countries he travelled through. They were speaking of an invisible inheritance.

Soleil d’Hiver asks a simple yet vertiginous question: what images do we create when searching for a land we do not know, but whose absence is inscribed within us? Through his travels, his images have been transformed: fractured landscapes, ghostly silhouettes, bodies erased by acid, seas without horizons, empty rooms, wounded architecture.

The traces of an exile passed down without words. They carry us onto a ferry bound for Algiers, into Cairo’s City of the Dead, through the narrow streets of the Middle East, into the solitude of a room or a desert. Every face becomes a ghost. Every landscape, a memory rising to the surface. The Arab world is not a backdrop here. It is the distorted mirror of a family memory he is trying to understand."
