Création of the solo for oud, electronics, tapes
& images (2024/25)
Half installation, half film, half concert, half performance, Soleil d’Hiver is a visual and sonic chimera that embodies the puzzle of my life, questioning where I come from and, perhaps, where I am going.
In it, I move from my father fleeing Algiers to my son dreaming of the world; I wander from Cairo to Beirut, thinking of those who feel exiled within their own country.
I caress and then distort my oud, making it sing nostalgia, vomit war, and weep for a world that no longer exists.
I reveal all these echoes and images I have stolen from the Arab world, from my home, from everywhere.
In 2024 and 2025, Grégory Dargent carried out numerous research residencies, both sonic and pictorial, in order to forge the vocabulary of this solo performance—contemporary, expressionist, yet also deeply rooted in the tradition of the oud. These residencies became moments of confrontation between different visions of an instrument, a geography, a history, a generation. They took him to Lebanon (Irtijal), Egypt (UG.Social), Iraq (Space21), Greece (N.O.Fest), and France. Life, never lacking in symbolism, saw the Algerian authorities expel him by boat in July 2024—just as he had come to work there on the question of his father’s flight—and since then, he has not been permitted to set foot on Algerian soil. The war and tensions in the Middle East also marked these residencies, leading to numerous changes in planning.
During these residencies, he crossed perspectives with many artists, musicians—both avant-garde and traditional. From these encounters emerged different musical paths, raw recordings of moments of improvisation, and field recordings. Together they form a taut thread in this creation, questioning nostalgia, heritage, mourning, and the contemporary gesture tied to this instrument—by turns urban, rural, furious, ethereal, ancestral, or utterly current.
These residencies also gave rise to numerous photographic and cinematographic captures, contributing to the visual literature of the performance. The spectator thus finds themselves on the boat bound for Algiers, in the waves, in Cairo’s City of the Dead, at the edge of a desert, or within the intimacy of the artist. Every being becomes a ghost there, and every sound searches for an echo.
The photographic book will be published by the Brussels-based publisher Le Mulet for the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles in 2026.
