Création of the solo for oud, electronics, tapes
& images (2024/25)
Grégory Dargent's first solo on oud, effects and tape, this is a research into memory and loss, and a creation that retraces his story as the son of a child who left Algeria during the war, burying his story for years.
This year-long project (2024) will explore these questions:
Is nostalgia hereditary?
Did he not seek to recreate an aesthetic world in order to heal, through music that is not irrefragable, a nostalgia that is not his own?
A year of residencies and laboratories
During 2024, a number of residencies will be held, in France, the Middle East, Greece... and elsewhere, depending on the opportunities to be created. These residencies will be the framework for the creation of the vocabulary of this solo, contemporary yet absolutely rooted in the expression of the oud. They will be moments of confrontation between different visions of an instrument, a geography, a history, a generation.
During these residencies, Gregory Dargent will cross paths with different artists, avant-garde and traditional musicians. These crossroads will give rise to various musical tracks, wild recordings of moments of improvisation. These recordings will form the skeleton of the album accompanying this creation. A solo album. An album immersed in encounters along the history of this instrument, whether urban, rural, mountainous, ancestral or contemporary.
These residencies will also serve as photographic, cinematographic and literary backdrops for the creation of still and moving images. They will serve as poetic support points, complementing both the photographic book currently being prepared by Éditions Saturne and the projections planned for 2024/25 during the solo performance.
Lastly, video artist Anil Eraslan will follow part of these stages to produce an audiovisual object on the project as a whole, as well as the videos presenting it.
Another laboratory stage was spent with musician and sound engineer Anthony Laguerre, examining the sound space during concerts and the various broadcasting possibilities, and working with Gregory to refine the language of magnetic tape on the Revox B77.
